How to Factory Reset Oculus Quest 2 without Phone/App (EASY!)
If your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 is having issues, or you’re trying to sell it and want to wipe all the settings clean before you do, you’ll have to factory reset it.
This is typically done with a phone, using the Meta Quest app. But what if your phone isn’t connected or available? Luckily, you can still easily factory reset your Quest 2 without it!
Factory Reset Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 without Phone
Make sure your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 is OFF, then press and hold the power and the volume down buttons at the same time until your Quest turns ON. Then use the volume button on your headset to scroll down to “Factory reset” and press the power button. Finally select, “Yes, erase and factory reset”.
This will start the reset process.
When complete, your Quest 2 will be reverted back to day you bought it. It’ll will be as if you’re taking it out of the box for the first time!
1. Enable Quest 2 Cloud Backup
Before you get started with the reset process, I highly recommend you ensure that Cloud Backup is turned on. Cloud Backup ensures that your Quest 2 in-game progress and settings are saved for all cloud enabled apps.
Step 1: To turn on Cloud Backup put on your headset and then hover of the clock on the left-hand side (Quick Settings).
Step 2: Then go to Settings.
Step 3: Select System.
Step 4: And then Backup. Make sure Cloud Backup is enabled!
2. Step-by-step Quest 2 factory reset process without phone
Ok, now that we’ve enabled Cloud Backup for your Quest 2, let’s start the factory reset process.
Step 1: Make sure your Quest 2 headset is OFF and then press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously until you see your Oculus Meta Quest 2 turn ON.
Step 2: Once you’ve entered “USB Update Mode” press the volume down button to toggle. Keep hitting volume down until you land on “Factory reset” then press the power button to select it.
Step 3: Finally, press the volume down button to toggle to “Yes, erase and factory reset” then press the power button to select it.
This will begin the factory reset process of your Oculus Meta Quest 2. All of your data will be erased. Once the reset is complete, your Quest 2 will be like the day you bought it!
Keep in mind that you cannot undo a factory reset. It will remove all your account information, downloaded games and content from the headset itself.
That said, any content you’ve purchased or downloaded from your account will not be removed.
Factory Reset Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 using a laptop
Another option is to remote factory reset your Quest 2 using a laptop.
This factory reset method comes in handy if you lost your Quest 2, or someone stole it.
To perform a remote wipe of your Meta Quest 2 even if you don’t have access to your actual device, do the following:
- On your computer go to: https://secure.oculus.com/my/devices/ and login
- Select your device
- Click on Delete Device Data
- Complete the verification process to confirm your identify
Once the reset is done, your Quest 2 will be removed from the list and it will automatically be factory reset the next time it comes online!
NOTE: If you don’t see the option to Delete Device Data, it’s possible that your software version doesn’t support a remote wipe.
Reasons to factory reset Oculus (Meta) Quest 2
There are a few reasons you might consider factory resetting your Quest 2.
The most common is when you’re experience technical issues with it. Some common technical issues include:
- App gets stuck uninstalling
- Wrong date/time which prevents successful WiFi connection
- Black screen of death
- Quest 2 won’t turn on
- Games keep crashing
- “No Command” error
Another reason to factory reset your Quest 2 would be if you’re selling it. You don’t want all your data stored on the device is someone else is going to be using it.
Finally, if someone stole your Quest 2 definitely factory reset it! Use the remote reset option I described above and make sure all your account data is wiped.
If you’re having technical issues, or if you’re looking to sell it, you’ll want to consider factory resetting your Quest 2.
Meta makes factory resetting the Oculus Meta Quest 2 without a phone really simple. Just follow these three steps:
- Press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously until you see your Oculus Meta Quest 2 turn ON.
- Once you’ve entered “USB Update Mode” press the volume down button to toggle. Keep hitting volume down until you land on “Factory reset” then press the power button to select it.

If you don’t have physical access to your Quest 2 headset, you can still factory reset it by logging into your Oculus account using your laptop!
